Homily of Card. Giuseppe Siri in the Easter Vigil (1971)
The passage of the Gospel of Luke (24, 1-12), you have now heard, made us witness to the Resurrection of the Lord as in a mirror, because this song does not tell the time of the Resurrection of Christ, tells what happened immediately After the announcement, and that women have the Angels. Dear, is the message for us: Christ is risen, is risen for us!
I would like briefly before starting the baptismal liturgy you ponder this: the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the beacon of our hope. Would not you talk a little 'too little of hope? Of course, the Resurrection of Christ is the object of faith and is also a demonstration - we'll talk about tomorrow morning - but the Resurrection of Christ is the beacon of our hope for this. Because if it is raised, if he himself has placed human life willingly and voluntarily of his power he summed up, there is nothing that can be impossible to Christ. And if there is anything that would be impossible to Christ, our hope is opened fully.
Let's talk about 'hope: what is it? Hope is a desire fiducial, is made up of two elements. The first is the desire, no need to explain it, because like so many that there are never forced to have at least everyone knows the definition. But I said fiducial desire. What is confidence? Trust is what the soul was quiet, because comforted by a valid promise and guarantee. Trust stands out because it has not the certainty, but it has the elements to make it perfectly reasonable to certainty. Desire and faith are the hope.
Now, dear, what is the object of hope that true theology, it is said that the three virtues are faith, hope and charity? What is the object? That must be very clear because of the confusion can be very harmful. The object is eternal life and the means to buy it. Do not impress you? Mind you that eternal life is all about. And it's what we created, is the thing for which we have to endure a trial, we are provided with the freedom and liberty we have the capability of merit. But the object of Christian hope is eternal life. Only? No, the graces we need to get there.
I understand that many perhaps do not feel their past to lift up his eyes and look to eternal life. I know very well that many say they do not believe in God, and it is not true! And the only true provided that they are so little faith in His goodness and mercy to fall into despair, desperation and cover by saying that they do not believe. For I the priests who assist the sick and dying, I always give this advice, and give it to you: if you say "I do not take the sacraments because they do not believe it," does not begin to say why must believe, because they believe more than you. Talk to them and see the infinite mercy of God! And every time I return the horses of this advice, consoling and joyful. I repeat: I think many feel they do not have hope in God in order to live good. I tell them they are wrong, the virtue of Christian hope, which must have to save, remind them that they can expect everything from God to resist temptation and live well, even miracles, if they were needed! Because this is the only case in which it is certain that if they were needed, would God do miracles. This is the object of hope.
I see someone who has some 'pulled the nose, but I think I can quickly dissolve, says: "And our affairs are the subject of hope?" Well, are not the main or the proper object of hope, but nothing that prohibits you Hope also about the things of this world, which are favorable, second, unpretentious though, because after Christ went to the Cross, you see that claim to go to heaven in a carriage is a bit 'Toppo. So yes, it is not the proper object of hope and principal, but it is an object, we might say, the well-being an accessory in the world. And with discretion and with resignation and with faith we can ask that too.
Now, who is it that inspires this hope? Risen Christ. A life without hope? What happens in a lot of our fellows who will do whatever is possible to exist and to forget to think? They have no hope. We pray to God that the Feast of the Resurrection kindle hope, and countless other things with the hope in many hearts.
I want to warn those who are present at this Mass fulfill the commandment for the day before Easter even though it is midnight.
